Hard Drive Enclosure Tips & Guide

There are several things you must see before you buy a hard drive enclosure for your computer:
1. Physical form
Before you buy a hard drive enclosure, you need to know on what kind of enclosure that the hard drive will be placed (notebook, laptop or desktop). That is three different kind of hard drive, which are 3.5”, 2.5” and 1.8”. The most popular of hard drive enclosure are 2.5” and 3.5”. The Hard drive size is look from the size of the disk platter that is used in the hard drive Casing, so you do not need to measure the size again
The hard drive can easily match with the hard drive enclosure, because the size of hard drives has been fixed and become standard size for hard drive in the world.
If you want to know about the size of hard drive:
- The size for hard drive 3.5” are 101.6 mm × 25.4 mm × 146 mm
- The size for hard drive 2.5” are 69.85 mm × 9.5–15 mm × 100 mm
- The size for hard drive 1.8” are 54mm x 8mm x 71mm
The 3.5” hard drive is commonly use for desktop pc. While 2.5” hard drive are commonly use for laptop pc. Because 1.8” hard drive is very small this kind of hard drive are use for very small notebooks or audio player such MP3 or MP4.
Be distinguished according to the size, the type of hard drive can usually be distinguished according to thickness or we can say the high of the hard drive. The bigger sizes of hard drive commonly thicker.
2. What are IDE and SATA?
IDE is Integrated Drive Electronics (Usually called ATA) and SATA is Serial ATA. So what is this?? This is the interface on the end of the hard drive. To distinguish between IDE and SATA is easy. If you look, the IDE/ATA have pins for jumper setting and have 2 rows of pins. But SATA has no pins.
3. Interface
That is 3 kind of interface that mostly uses to connect to the PC that is USB, firewire and eSATA. Not all PC have all this connections. Some have one or combinations of interface the like USB and Firewire. The most popular connection is USB2.0 because is this USB2.0 have become standard connection in the pc.The eSATA connection has great data speed transfer better than USB 2.0 and Firewire. You better use this type connection if your Hard Drive Enclosure support for this type connection.
All this hard drive is powered by the electricity that provided by the enclosure of the hard drive. Such 1.8” and 2.5” hard drive are BUS powered and supplied from the USB Cable that attached to the enclosure (PC). But the power for 3.5” hard drive is supplied from power cable that attached to the enclosure.
4. Fans for cooling
Fans at the enclosure are needed for cooling the hard drive, so the hard drive will not easily warm. But the fans always make noise. The enclosure is built to reduce heat.
Right now enclosure built with style, so you can choose a stylish enclosure according what you want. But the thing that you really to know that is you must choose an enclosure that really fit to your hard drive.
