ATA and SATA
By : Indra Zakki
To satisfied computer user, now days computer are build with more memory, great video and sound cards and of course very fast computer processors.
To keep data the computer need hard drives. Now Hard Drive come with great capacity, so the user can save more data in their computer.
To give what computer user want, many Hard Drive factories build more reliable Hard Drive. Now Hard Drive build with faster spindle speed, fast data transmission, larger caches and of course build with bigger capacity. All of this will give satisfaction for the computer user.
The standard type of Hard Drive is ATA (IDE drive). ATA it means Advanced Technology Attachment. ATA-7 is the latest ATA standard. This ATA-7 has data transfer speed rate up to 133Mb/Sec. Using parallel cable when ATA-7 hit 133M/Sec come a problem. This problem come because EMI (electromagnetic interference), signal timing and data integrity problem. To solve this problem, the Hard Drive manufactures developing SATA (Serial ATA). SATA have many advantage than ATA. In the future SATA drive will become standard and will replace ATA drive. SATA is the evolution of ATA. The use of ATA and SATA is to controlling computer drives.
The Different
The Different between ATA and SATA is ATA using 16bit parallel interface and SATA using 1bit serial interface. In drive form ATA and SATA Drive can easily be distinguished by the look of data connection and power connection at the back of the drives. ATA using 40pin data connection cable and 4pin power connection that can deliver 5V power to the ATA drive. But the latest ATA Drives using 80pin data connection cable.
SATA cable have maximum lengths up to 1 meter and smaller than ATA data cable, sot it will give more room on the motherboard and airflow. For power cable SATA using 15pin power cable that can deliver 250mV. But for convenience SATA power cable also build with 4pin power connection. If you are using old type of motherboard. You can use adapters like PCI slot SATA controller and 4pin to 15pin SATA power adapter.
SATA drives is better than ATA drives because SATA using less power than ATA. The benefit from SATA drive is maximum data transfer bandwidth. Data transfer bandwidth that provided by SATA is up to 150Mb/sec. This is more faster than ATA that provided up to 133Mb/sec.
Do to the fast technology movement, now arrived SATA II that have data transfer speed up to 300Mb/Sec.
For the price, if compared between SATA and ATA Drives. SATA drives is more expensive than ATA Drives. But with the benefits of SATA Drives a few dollar different can be justified.
So how about you Choosing ATA or SATA?
